JAMES HETFIELD wants to protect his property, but his neighbors aren't happy about it. The METALLICA guitarist owns two parcels of land in the wealthy San Francisco suburb of Marin County. One of them, purchased in 2002, includes a "fire road" that the previous owners allowed people to use to access public hiking trails. But according to the website San Francisco Gate, Hetfield recently put up a barbed wire fence to keep the public off the trail. One of his 75-year-old neighbors, who has used the trail since the 1960s, calls the move, quote, "a slap in the face to the community." A county supervisor tells the paper it's an example of new landowners being unaware of the local tradition of granting public access to private property.
Hetfield's reps reportedly told county officials the fence was erected in response to vandalism on the property. When contacted by ABC News, his management company had no comment on the story.
